Early on the morning of February 24th, Russian President Vladimir Putin announced on state television that Russia will carry out a 'special military operation' in eastern Ukraine.

Moscow claims the 'operation' is aimed at 'denazification and demilitarization' of Ukrainian territory at the request of the self-proclaimed Donetsk and Luhansk 'people's republics', and is based on the right to self-defence. Russia also says that it does not attack the civilian population.

But, the fact is, Russian armed forces have killed innocent people, including children and the elderly. Russia deliberately targets civilian infrastructure and falsely claims that it is Ukraine's army that puts people's lives at risk.

Suspilne, the largest independent news media outlet in Ukraine, and a number of English-speaking volunteers launch this live updates page to let the world know what is really happening on the ground. Tune in for hourly news bulletins from all Ukrainian regions.

"All factories are on fire, houses are on fire, people are sitting in basements, all your life moves to the basement. In addition to the fact that there is no water, we drink it almost from the river. And to get to the river, you need to run under fire. There's no food. We had to fry pickle juice-based flatbreads on the open fire. "

"We fled as we could. We gathered as many cars as possible and just went forward. Good luck, bad luck, that's it. There is simply no other option to leave. And it is impossible to live there. The city is on fire. Everything is destroyed."

"Bodies are lying everywhere, morgues are not working, they need to be put somewhere. That's why we dug holes, dumped bodies, buried them. There was no other way out. It's so frustrating..."

"Unfortunately, they burn down the entire districts, residential complexes, and so on. Mines are everywhere, shells are falling and sticking out of the asphalt. It becomes normal. You stop hiding from these explosions, you understand which one is far and which is closer. For two weeks, we've been in Mariupol without light, without water, without gas, without communication, cut off from the world."

"Every day, you start feeling worse and worse psychologically. Planes fly by. You understand that something is coming now. I wanted to escape from Mariupol in every possible way. That's it. Like many others, I understood perfectly well that it's a 50/50 chance that we will get out today. There was a chance that we couldn't get here or leave the city. We can say we were lucky."
